‘Underground Stories’ was a part of a group show held in Campbell arcade. Built for the convenience of visitors during the 1956 Olympic games the arcade runs under Flinders Street, Melbourne, from the main train station to Degraves Street opposite. The dozen or so display cases once used for advertising are being used as an exhibition space.
The enclosed space challenged me in making a mutable, interactive and immersive installation.
A surface of clay slip was applied to the window, repeatedly washed off then reapplied. Passes by could peep through gaps or make peep holes themselves or draw onto the surface to discover what lay underneath.
A projection interacted with the objects, the clay ‘screen’ and sometimes spilled out onto the ceiling outside the vitrine. The objects themselves were connected by their stories.
